Heal-well Herbal Skin Salve Recipe

There’s something truly special about natural remedies. In a world that often leans on quick fixes and artificial solutions, herbal salves offer a chance to reconnect with the simple, effective power of plants. And when it comes to soothing and healing your skin, this original recipe for my very own Heal-Well Herbal Skin Salve has been stolen over the years by other blogs and books but it is mine and is something I used to make decades ago for my children. It’s a gentle, multipurpose balm that harnesses the natural healing properties of herbs to care for everything from cuts and bruises to dry skin and minor rashes.
This balm isn’t just for the skin; it’s for the soul. It brings a bit of that old-world herbal wisdom into our everyday lives, with a gentle touch that both nurtures and comforts. Made from a carefully selected blend of calendula, chamomile, lemon balm, nettles, and thyme, this salve is crafted to help your skin heal naturally — in a way that feels both grounding and effective.
The Herbs & Oils Behind Heal-Well Salve
Each of the herbs in this salve was chosen for its unique ability to support the skin’s natural healing process. Let’s take a look at what makes them so special:
- Calendula: Often called “the skin healer,” calendula helps soothe irritated skin, reduce inflammation, and support faster healing of minor cuts and scrapes.
- Chamomile: Known for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties, chamomile helps reduce redness and irritation, making it perfect for sensitive skin.
- Lemon Balm: With its gentle antiviral and soothing effects, lemon balm is wonderful for calming inflamed or itchy skin and promoting relaxation.
- Nettles: A powerful anti-inflammatory, nettles are excellent for reducing swelling and supporting the healing of bruises and cuts.
- Thyme: Rich in antibacterial properties, thyme helps protect minor wounds from infection while encouraging the skin to heal more efficiently.
- Palmarosa: In various cosmetics and skincare you can buy off the shelves in shops because of it’s excellent skin soothing and healing properties, especially for dry skin, rashes and minor cuts.
- Tea Tree: Natural antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties.
Together, these herbs form a balanced, healing combination that’s ideal for treating minor wounds, dry patches, bruises, insect bites, and more.

The Recipe: Heal-Well Herbal Skin Salve
So now you know the why’s and wherefores, here is how to make your own Heal-Well Herbal Skin Salve at home. This recipe is simple to follow, and it’s full of natural ingredients! All dried herbs can be purchased online or foraged (or grown) and dried yourself!
Ingredients
To Make The Infused Herbal Oil:
- 5g dried calendula flowers
- 5g dried chamomile flowers
- 5g dried lemon balm
- 5g dried nettles
- 10g dried thyme
- 300ml olive oil (or any other base oil you wish to use)
For the Salve Base:
- 60g beeswax pellets or grated beeswax (Climate and also different beeswax can make a huge difference on the softness of your salve, so you may need slightly more or less)
- 10 drops palmarosa essential oil
- 19 drops tea tree essential oil (if you have eczema, reduce to 5 drops or omit completely, depending on your eczema severity}
- Sterilised jars or tins for storage
Step 1: Infuse the Oil
Slow infusion method (recommended):
- Place the dried herbs into a clean, dry glass jar.
- Pour in the olive oil (or other base oil) until the herbs are fully submerged, leaving AT LEAST about 2–3 cm of oil above the herbs.
- Seal the jar and place it in a sunny spot for 3–4 weeks, shaking gently every day.
- After the infusion period, strain the oil through muslin or a fine sieve, pressing to extract all the oil. Store the infused oil in a dark glass container.
Quick method:
- Combine the herbs and oil in a heatproof bowl over a simmering pot of water (double boiler).
- Gently warm for 2–3 hours, being careful not to boil the oil.
- Strain and store the oil as above.
Step 2: Make the Salve
- In a heatproof bowl, combine beeswax with infused herbal oil (you will have some oil left over, this is a good thing! Add the left overs to a sealed jar and keep in your fridge for 2 weeks in case you want to make another smaller batch!).
- Gently melt the beeswax and oil together over low heat.
- Once fully melted, remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Stir in the palmarosa essential oil and tea tree essential oil.
- Pour the mixture into sterilised tins or jars and leave it to cool completely.
- Once set, your salve is ready to use. Seal and label your jars.
Storage & Shelf Life
Store your salve in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. It will keep for 6–12 months. Always use clean fingers or a spatula to scoop out the balm to maintain its freshness.
